West Coast Fever centre court player, Ingrid Colyer tells us that her Mum and Dad are her netball heroes.
Growing up on a farm in Karridale, 3 hours south west of Perth presented some unique challenges for Colyer and her developing netball career. But, Colyer said her parents never said no to any opportunity she was given.
“Mum and Dad gave up every free moment to drive me around the country side and up to Perth to play netball,” Colyer said.
Driving 3 hours from Karridale to Perth on weekends and some weekday nights to play netball may seem crazy to some people, but to Colyer and her parents it became a natural part of their life.
“Mum and Dad would drive me to Perth every weekend and on school nights too for State League. Getting back home at 2am and then having to go to school the next day – I don’t know how I did it!” Colyer laughed.
Trying her hand at basketball, horse-riding and even BMX, Colyer said her parents backed her all the way.
“My parents were very active in the Augusta-Margaret River community, always helping out on game days whether it be on canteen duty, scoring or being on the committee.”
“It was great growing up with them encouraging me to participate in a variety of sports,” Colyer said.
Colyer was only filling in for a high school netball team when the coach suggested to her Mum that she better learn to score.
“The coach told my Mum that I was going to be in the sport for a long time, so she better learn to score. Mum was always very committed and encouraging so she was happy to do it,” Colyer said.
Now as an established, key mid-court player, Colyer said she could have not made it this far without her parent’s support.
