Suncorp Super Netball today announced a two-goal ‘Super Shot’ to be introduced this season, commencing August 1.
This new scoring system will provide goal attacks and goal shooters with the opportunity to score two goals by shooting from a 1.9 metre designated zone within the goal circle and be active in the final five minutes of each quarter.
West Coast Fever coach Stacey Marinkovich said today’s announcement came as a shock and has added more changes to a season disrupted by COVID-19.
“This whole experience of COVID has been forever changing and, for me, I thought we just started to get back into a routine of what felt like normality,” Marinkovich said.
“I think that by bringing in another rule, you’re just throwing a bit of a spanner in the works in terms of preparation,
“We’ve only just returned to full contact training - to have a complete rule change will be challenging, but we’ll embrace it.”
This new rule doesn’t just impact a club’s attacks and will have just as big an impact on the defensive structures. West Coast Fever have just five weeks to prepare for this new rule change.
“We need to get into training and work out what impact this has on games and how it fits into our current game plan and strategy. We’ve certainly got shooters who have the capacity to shoot at distance from the post,” Marinkovich said.
West Coast Fever Managing Director, Simon Taylor said: “Fever’s success as a club relies on our ability to innovate, remain agile and embrace changes.”
Another addition to the season, if scores are tied at the end of the match, teams will play five minutes of extra time with the ‘Super Shot’ active for the entire five minutes.
The 2020 season begins on Saturday, August 1, with the fixture to be confirmed in the coming weeks.
