West Coast Fever Head Coach Stacey Marinkovich says she was pleased by the way her side performed in two convincing pre-season victories over Giants Netball in Kalgoorlie over the weekend.
Fever took the first game 74-58 and the second 70-50, with Marinkovich noting some early successes across the court.
“The implementation of rolling subs and unlimited timeouts brings another level of pace to the game and certainly for the way in which we want to play,” said Marinkovich.
“With the opportunity for constant fresh legs, the skill of the game improves and increases because players aren’t as mentally and physically fatigued, leading to better decision making.”
The matches also allowed for experimentation, with all 10 players getting on the court across both games.
Courtney Bruce spent time at Goal Defence, Stacey Francis ran at Wing Defence and Jess Anstiss spent time in the Centre.
“I’ve got ten players who are really challenging for court time and with the implementation of the rolling subs it’s really changed the mentality, they know at any time they can enter the court.”
“I wouldn't be surprised if through the season you do see some different starts and different rotations from us as its proving to be valuable now and we will certainly keep experimenting with it at Team Girls Cup.”
Jhaniele Fowler was dominant in the goal circle, converting at 100% all weekend, while Kaylia Stanton was strong in Goal Attack and Goal Shooter.
Alice Teague-Neeld showed her exciting prospects, shooting 90% in the first game and combined strongly with both Fowler and Stanton across the weekend.
“Part way through the third quarter in the second match saw us take Jhaniele off and it was pleasing to see the attacking team being able to adapt to a moving circle and our scoring rate remain the same.”
“It’s really encouraging when you have the pinnacle Goal Shooter of the competition on the bench and two up and coming players are able to combine like they did. It shows how much they’ve developed as individuals and as a combination when you compare what we looked like last year without Jhaniele to what we look like now.”
