The Situation
West Coast Fever head to Queensland to take on the Firebirds in what promises to be an entertaining contest between two teams that have historically matched up well.
Fever remains undefeated after six consecutive wins start to the season and Firebirds are the only side they have not yet met.
All 10 Fever players took the court and performed their role well in a convincing 78-55 win over Collingwood Magpies last week, giving coach Stacey Marinkovich plenty of options heading into Sunday’s contest.
Firebirds will enter the contest with confidence on their home court after defeating their Queensland rivals, Sunshine Coast Lightning, last week on the road.
Key Match Ups
Goal Defence v Goal Attack
Sunday Aryang v Gretel Bueta
Aryang is one of Super Netball’s rising stars and has been added to the conversation about Australian Diamonds selection following her performances so far in 2021. This has included 10 intercepts, 18 deflections and 9 rebounds from six games as she has played a key role at the defensive end for Fever, disrupting opposition play and turning defence into attack. Gretel Bueta is also one of the competition’s most exciting players with a unique attacking style highlighted by skill, agility and long-range accuracy. A match-up between these players is an exciting prospect.
Goal Keeper v Goal Shooter
Courtney Bruce v Romelda Aiken
Fever captain Courtney Bruce has been in terrific form this season and is leading Suncorp Super Netball in intercepts with a total of 20 from just six games. She has also recorded 40 deflections and 10 rebounds, making teams earn every single goal and possession against Fever. This week she will be focussed on containing Firebirds’ shooter Romelda Aiken, who has scored 208 goals at 88 per cent this season. Aiken has also hit 7 super-shots at 54 per cent and leads the competition in offensive rebounds with 34, making her a key layer for her team at the attacking end.
Goal Attack v Goal Defence
Sasha Glasgow v Kim Jenner
Glasgow started the game at Goal Attack for the first time last week and put on a sensational super-shot display with 5 from 6 attempts. She also notched up 16 goals assists from 23 feeds and formed a potent combination with Jhaniele Fowler and Alice Teague-Neeld in the circle for Fever. Firebirds Goal Defence Kim Jenner will be aiming to limit Glasgow’s influence in this contest and will look to use her speed to add to her 10 intercepts and 26 deflections for the season.
