The Situation
Two of Suncorp Super Netball’s undefeated teams so far in 2021 will meet on the Sunshine Coast in what promises to be a highly entertaining contest.
West Coast Fever started the season with a win over reigning champions Melbourne Vixens and backed that up with victory against NSW Swifts in their first home game at RAC Arena in 630 days.
A Jhaniele Fowler super-shot sealed the 63-55 win to the delight of a 5000-strong Green Army crowd, following a comeback in the final five minutes of the game.
Captain Courtney Bruce again starred in defence with four intercepts and four gains, alongside Sunday Aryang who had one intercept and five gains.
Emma Cosh played an instrumental role at Wing Attack, notching up 23 goal assists from 34 feeds.
Lightning defeated Collingwood Magpies 67-56 in Round 1 and recorded a 56-51 win over Vixens last week. Goal Shooter Cara Koenen is third on the SSN goals list with 81, behind Fowler on 110 at the top of the table.
Key Match Ups
Goal Keeper v Goal Shooter
Courtney Bruce v Cara Koenen
Courtney Bruce’s flying intercept in the dying stages of last Saturday’s game against NSW Swifts helped turn the tide for a Fever comeback. She continues to lead by example on the court and shut down the competition’s best shooters, which will be the task at hand again this weekend when she matches up on Cara Koenen, who has scored 81 goals at 89% so far this season to sit third on the SSN shooting leader’s list.
Goal Attack v Goal Defence
Sasha Glasgow v Karla Pretorious
Sasha Glasgow entered the game for Fever in the second half last Saturday and had an impact with her dynamic attack, scoring a super-shot to put the Fever in front on their way to a thrilling win. Along with fellow Goal Attack Alice Teague-Neeld, Glasgow has formed a potent combination with Goal Shooter Jhaniele Fowler since arriving from Adelaide, giving coach Stacey Marinkovich plenty of options with her variation and setting a challenge for new Lightning skipper Karla Pretorius in Goal Defence.
Goal Shooter v Goal Keeper
Jhaniele Fowler v Phumza Maweni
Jhaniele Fowler continues to set the standard in Suncorp Super Netball, leading the list of goal-shooters after the opening two rounds with a total of 110, 27 ahead of NSW Swifts shooter Sam Wallace on 83.
South African international Phumza Maweni will be giving up 10cm in height to Fowler and will need to use all of her athletic ability in the circle. It is likely she will share the Goal Keeper duties with teammate Kate Shimmin to help keep Fowler in check.
