In a time of uncertainty, netball continues to band together with Suncorp Super Netball’s Jamaican players set to spend the foreseeable future in Western Australia.
West Coast Fever shooter Jhaniele Fowler will play host to Thunderbirds defender Shamera Sterling, Vixens defender Kadie-Ann Dehaney and Collingwood defender Jodi-Ann Ward. The four athletes play alongside one another at an international level for the Jamaican team, Sunshine Girls.
The decision comes off the back of Fever being unable to reschedule Fowler’s family’s flight from Jamaica to Perth prior to the national border closure.
The health and wellbeing of our athletes is paramount at West Coast Fever and across the league, with Fever, Vixens, Thunderbirds and Collingwood working swiftly to organise the players landing on WA soil before the interstate travel ban came into effect.
West Coast Fever Managing Director Simon Taylor shared how our sport is bigger than just what happens on the court.
“In times like this the team you play for matters little. The netball community is a family and we’re proud to be able to host the Jamaican athletes so they can feel a little slice of home away from home,” said Taylor.
“This is unprecedented times across the world, and we’re committed to ensuring that athletes across the country continue to not only look after themselves physically but mentally as well.”
This decision comes as the Super Netball League Commission has announced the 2020 season will be deferred and will not commence prior to 30 June.
