The Situation
West Coast Fever are coming off their biggest win ever, after defeating Sunshine Coast Lightning 80-56 in Round 8. Firebirds won a close battle against Thunderbirds, 54-53. Despite Fever sitting in the top 4 and Firebirds seventh, it was only three rounds ago Fever fell to the Queensland side and they have not forgotten. Now, Fever know what they are up against and that winning feeling has the players more determined than ever to put in another solid performance and look at three wins in a row.
Key Match-Ups
Goal Keeper v Goal Shooter
Courtney Bruce v Romelda Aiken
Romelda Aiken currently has 310 goals for the season and is leading the offensive rebound count with 60. Despite Courtney Bruce missing the first three rounds her defensive efforts each game has seen her climb the rankings with 15 rebounds and 17 intercepts. Last time the two played each other in Round 6, Bruce threw everything she had at the goal shooter finishing with 11 deflections and five intercepts.
Centre v Centre
Verity Charles v Mahalia Cassidy
Verity Charles played her best game this season against Lightning and when Verity is unstoppable it means two things, more feeds to goal shooter Jhaniele Fowler, resulting in more goals for Fever. Charles had 41 feeds and 26 goal assists in Round 8. Mahalia Cassidy is an important player for Firebirds with her endless stamina and attack on the ball. Cassidy trails Charles with overall goal assists 136-139 and both players will be determined to get the upper hand early to get the scoreboard ticking over.
Goal Attack v Goal Defence
Alice Teague-Neeld v Kim Jenner
Alice Teague-Neeld is coming off the back of a great performance against Lightning, in her 50th game Teague-Neeld dominated her role with three super shots, 31 feeds and 21 goal assists. As the season progresses Teague-Neeld continues to put her twist on the goal attack role, drawing opponents out of the circle to give teammate Jhaniele Fowler and advantage. Kim Jenner will be hot on the heels of Teague-Neeld and will be looking at taking front position, applying pressure on Fever’s goal attack.
