The biggest talking point of the match is undoubtably Romelda Aiken-George facing her old teammates for the first time and the emergence of new shooting recruit Elmeré van der Berg.
The Thunderbirds are coming off the back of a successful pre-season campaign and 20-goal win over the NSW Swifts in Round One.
South African recruit van der Berg shot 59 from 62 goals, an impressive performance on her Suncorp Super Netball debut. Star defender Shamera Sterling-Humphrey has also returned to the side, bringing her trademark dominance.
Fever were also on the Round One winners’ list after a three-goal win over the Sunshine Coast Lightning and will have confidence as they travel East.
Despite entering her 19th National League Season, Aiken-George played her best individual performance of her career in Round One with 53 goals, a testament to her talent and Head Coach Dan Ryan’s ability to pull the best out of his players.
Head-to-Head
All eyes will be on the Fever shooting end as former teammates and good friends Aiken-George and Stirling-Humphrey battle it out. Both athletes are extremely familiar with each-other and will be doing everything in their power to expose their opponents' weaknesses.
New-Zealand import Kate Heffernan has been turning heads since her entrance into SSN. If she fronts the centre bib, she will be up against the speed of Jordan Cransberg, if she heads into Wing Defence, the smarts and experience of Alice Teague-Neeld will no doubt be intimidating.
Kadie-Ann Dehaney will have her sights set on van der Berg, looking to shut down her accuracy and slow down the Thunderbirds’ ability to get scores on the board.
From the Court
Head Coach Dan Ryan said he was happy with the positive start to the season, but the Thunderbirds are a benchmark team.
“For us it’s going to be a complete squad mentality to get the job done,” he said.
Fever and the Thunderbirds played each other twice already in the pre-season, an experience that will be beneficial come Saturday.
“For the players to have felt what this new look Thunderbirds team is like is really important to give us some intel of what to expect.”
