West Coast Fever are set to host Indigenous Round at RAC Arena as they take on the ladder-leading GIANTS on Monday 31 May.
As one of the first clubs in the league to host an Indigenous Round, recognising and celebrating the First Nations people and culture is extremely important to West Coast Fever.
One of the club’s flagship events, Indigenous Round, provides an opportunity to showcase Fever’s engagement with its Official Charity Partner, Shooting Stars, and celebrate the oldest culture in the world.
Shooting Stars is an educational program that uses sport and other tools to empower young Aboriginal girls and women in remote Western Australia to make informed choices about their education and employment journey.
In the lead up to the game, West Coast Fever athletes and Shooting Stars participants come together for an official dress blessing ceremony, led by respected Noongar Elder and Noongar language specialist, Aunty Roma Winmar.
Designed by Noongar artists, Peter Farmer and Kylie Graham, the Indigenous Dress features seven circular symbols representing the seven players on the court gathering or coming together and the unpredictable path water weaves throughout the landscape.
West Coast Fever’s top tier members and sponsors will hear from the inspiring Shooting Stars participants and staff around the impact of the Shooting Stars program on WA’s Aboriginal communities at the pre-game function.
On court, the game will be played using a special ball designed by Yorta-Yorta/Wurundjeri woman, Simone Thomson, while Fever Alley will feature a community canvas project, led by Whadjuk Noongar artist Julianne Wade, for the Green Army to get involved in celebrating the First Nations peoples and cultures.
