West Coast Fever will shoot for their first victory over the Queensland Firebirds in Suncorp Super Netball when the teams clash at RAC Arena on Sunday.
But midcourter Jess Anstiss said the Firebirds’ past wins in Perth were not front of mind heading into the Round 13 showdown.
Anstiss said Fever are a completely different team now, and so are the Firebirds.
“We match up against the Firebirds really well and we still haven’t beaten them in Suncorp Super Netball.”
“We had a draw over in Brisbane earlier in the year and it’s always a close competition with them. We definitely want to go out there and get a win in front of our home crowd,” said Anstiss.
Anstiss said after reviewing Monday night’s clash with the Collingwood Magpies at RAC Arena, the obvious area for improvement was consistency.
“We have lots to work on, but we just need to work on our consistency. In the third quarter, we had five minutes where we let the game get away from us.”
Anstiss said they would prepare for a range of combinations against the Firebirds.
“We have looked at every combination they could put out there, but we can’t expect that they (Firebirds) will play certain players.”
“Even with Magpies, they played different combinations to what we ideally thought they would play,” said Anstiss.
Stepping up as a young leader for the group this season, Anstiss says that the team must focus on themselves rather than what other teams are putting out there.
“I just try not to change what I do out there – on and off the court. I just remain myself and lead by being me.”
“Position wise, it’s up to the coaches, I’m sure Stacey (Marinkovich) will put out whatever it takes to win the game and then potentially bring some youth through if we’re up by a fair bit,” said Anstiss.
