Fever finish pre season with strong win over Vixens

Posted 5 months ago.

West Coast Fever have finalised their preparations for the season proper with an impressive six-goal victory over the Melbourne Vixens at the State Netball Centre today.

Fever fell short in Saturday’s game against the Vixens in Mandurah, but made an impressive comeback on Sunday, winning the game 57-51.

It was a tight start to the game with both sides putting strong starting sevens on the court.

Kaylia Stanton and Jhaniele Fowler continued to combine well in the goal circle, netting 16 goals in the opening stanza to give the home side a three goal lead at quarter time.

Stacey Francis and Courtney Bruce showed great defensive pressure allowing Fever to maintain their three goal lead at half time.

Fever fought hard and dominated the third quarter, with Alice Teague-Neeld combining strongly with Fowler in the goal circle, while the midcourt forced a number of turnovers to give Fever an eight-goal lead with two minutes to go.

However, in typical fashion, the Vixens continued to push, cutting Fever’s three quarter time lead to just five goals.

It was goal for goal in the last quarter, however Fever held their nerve in front of a vocal home crowd to run out six goal victors.

Head Coach Stacey Marinkovich was pleased with the way her side finished off the weekend.

“It’s not always about the wins, our brand of netball has been building each time we step out there,” Marinkovich said.

“It’s all about what we transfer in our next lot of match play, and we’ve been building nicely from Brisbane to Bendigo to the Vixens this weekend.”

With Round 1 on the horizon, Marinkovich said there was still room for improvement.

“We’ve still got things to work on and we’ve got a couple of weeks to keep refining and I think the group recognises that too.”

“The game is evolving and team are becoming more athletic and powerful so you’ve got to be able to last the season and keep running hard.”

West Coast Fever play their first game for the season in Adelaide on April 28 against the Adelaide Thunderbirds.
