West Coast Fever’s one goal victory over Sunshine Coast

West Coast Fever’s undefeated run in the 2018 Suncorp Super Netball season has continued, following a thrilling 56-55 away win against Sunshine Coast Lightning.

It was Fever’s grit in defence which helped steer them to victory, Stacey Francis and Courtney Bruce turning their defensive circle into a fortress.

Bruce capped off the one goal victory with five intercepts, which helped Fever to surge up the court for shooters Natalie Medhurst and Jhaniele Fowler to capitalise on.

Verity Charles and Ingrid Colyer were magnificent in the midcourt, combining for 32 goal assists for the game.

Coach Stacey Marinkovich praised the team for maintaining their efforts for the entire clash.

“The way in which we controlled the ball, we contested really hard to keep ourselves in it when the game was ebbing and flowing, to be able to stand strong when the moments counted was something we’ve really evolved," she said.

“To get a win like this on the road after a flight and bus trip is a sensational effort by the girls."

“It’s more about our focus of being a better team each time we step out on court and it starts in the training environment the more intensity that we have there, the pressure that we are putting on ourselves, it’s really helping in those tight situations.”

Both teams came out firing in the opening quarter Fowler and Lightning’s Caitlin Bassett the targets for both teams, but it was the Sunshine Coast that finished one goal in front at the end of the first.

Bruce forced a number of turnovers in the second, with Medhurst and Fowler doing their bit to keep the goals ticking along, both sides finished the half with a bonus point each.

Sunshine Coast managed to grab the lead right on the end of three quarter time, which set the scene for an exciting finish to the game.

Fever managed to take back the lead and hold out to finish one goal winners.
