West Coast Fever return home brimming with confidence for their Round 10 clash against the Sunshine Coast Lightning after securing a stunning victory over the Magpies in Melbourne on Saturday night.
The 70-57 win was the Fever’s first victory in Melbourne since 2010, highlighting the growth and maturity of the playing group over the past 18 months.
While the landmark win keeps Fever essentially a game clear on top of the ladder, the Lightning have recovered from a poor start to the year to square their season at four wins, four losses and a draw to sit fifth on the ladder.
Fever were brutal in their dismantling of the Magpies, bursting out of the blocks with a 16-11 first quarter, and putting their foot on the throat of their opponents throughout the match to take a 13-goal lead into the last quarter with captain Courtney Bruce leading the team strongly from defence.
Although last year’s premiers struggled in the early rounds of this season, the Lightning should not be underestimated after getting their season back on track with a hard-fought one goal win over the Firebirds in Round 9 and drawing with the second-placed Giants in Round 8.
Fever last met the Lightning in Round 3 at USC Stadium, coming away with a heart-stopping one goal win.
