Marinkovich impressed with showing against Diamonds

West Coast Fever Head Coach Stacey Marinkovich says she was impressed with her side in their two games against the Samsung Diamonds at the Australian Institute of Sport today and yesterday.

Fever will now travel to Sydney to face Giants Netball tomorrow and the NSW Swifts Sunday, before taking on the England Roses on Wednesday.

The matches against the Diamonds gave Fever a unique opportunity to take on the best side in the world, and also marked the return of Shannon Eagland and Verity Charles following their respective knee surgeries.

Marinkovich said she was excited by what she saw and said there were a number of highlights.

“It was definitely a huge challenge for the group, but we were looking for consistency around our behaviours in attack and defence and I think we showed that,” Marinkovich said.

“We built over the two games and started playing our brand of netball, and started to execute our game plan, which meant we saw some really good outcomes.”

“We saw some strong unit work, particularly from our attackers who defended really hard, and we were able to slow the Diamonds down.”

“We developed some really strong passages of play and kept the court balanced, so we have a good mindset that we are building for Round 1.”

Marinkovich also relished the opportunity to get her full squad on court, including two Training Partners.

“It was really good to test our depth and versatility,” she said.

“We managed to get (Training Partners) Jess Eales and Emma Cosh on the court as well, which highlights the strength of our squad.”

“Seeing Verity and Shannon on the court for the first time gave them confidence, and now they can start to hone in one what they’re trying to deliver.”

Fever will return home next Wednesday to finalise their preparations for the season proper, which begins against the Adelaide Thunderbirds at Priceline Stadium on April 29.

Fever’s first home clash is against the Magpies at Perth Arena on Saturday May 5.
