Fever topple Giants in two-goal thriller

West Coast Fever have recorded their first ever victory over Giants Netball in a thrilling 63-61 victory in front of 8,306 fans at Perth Arena on Saturday night.

The win sees Fever remain undefeated at home and on top of the Suncorp Super Netball ladder for another round.

In a final quarter which was only separated by a single goal for a majority of the time, it was a late defensive effort from Captain Courtney Bruce that helped Fever pull away to finish two goals ahead.

Jhaniele Fowler was once again dominant in the forward circle finishing the game with 53 goals from 56 attempts.

Nat Medhurst helped Fever control possession up front with 37 feeds, 33 goal assists while pitching in on the score board with 10 goals from 11 attempts.

Head Coach Stacey Marinkovich lauded her troops.

"This is massive for us," she said.

"I wanted to see how we responded and I think that was a big question mark over the group."

"I'm so proud of the team collectively."

"Each game is like a finals game at the moment, this shows we can cope under pressure."

It was a tight contest from the opening centre pass which saw Fever push out to a 6-goal lead, before the Giants managed to pull back the margin to three goals at the end of the first term.

The second quarter was almost identical to the previous quarter as Fever pulled out to a seven-goal lead only for the Giants to pull back and go into half time three goals behind.

The Giants managed to pull in front early in the third quarter, however Jess Anstiss was moved into Centre with Shannon Eagland injected into Wing Defence, with the move paying dividends as Fever pulled the scores back to level at the final break.

Fever’s defence pushed hard against the Giants trio Jo Harten, Susan Pettitt and Kristina Brice as both teams ticked over the score line.

Fever managed to find a way to gain a vital two goal lead in the final stages of the game to run out winners at home once more.

West Coast Fever will now have two weeks until their next clash, which will be away to the Melbourne Vixens, before returning home to take on the Adelaide Thunderbirds at Perth Arena in the Club's Shooting Stars Round on June 23.
