West Coast Fever have relished their first competitive hit out before the second season of Suncorp Super Netball, taking valuable experiences from their clash against the highly-fancied Magpies Netball at the State Netball Centre this afternoon.
With squad members Jhaniele Fowler, Jess Anstiss, Shannon Eagland and Verity Charles all out of action, Head Coach Stacey Marinkovich rotated through a number of Training Partners and West Coast Fever Academy athletes.
Fever skipped out to an early three goal lead, before the Magpies rallied to take a one goal buffer into the quarter time break, extending the margin to six goals at half time.
Kaylia Stanton and Nat Medhurst spent the entire match at Goal Shooter and Goal Attack respectively, allowing their combination to continue to grow, while Academy athlete Courtney Kruta relished her time at Centre against Shae Brown.
Marinkovich continued to experiment with her line-up, with Stacey Francis spending the match at Wing Defence, while youngster Annika Lee-Jones was outstanding at Goal Keeper against Caitlin Thwaites.
Training Partner Jess Penny took her opportunity on court with both hands, recording a number of intercepts at Goal Defence.
Marinkovich was impressed with the way her side attacked their first match of the new season.
“We took a lot from today,” Marinkovich said.
“We went into this game to test what we have been doing for the last five or six weeks and the things we wanted to see the girls deliver.”
“It was about being fearless and having a really good crack at those things, and I could see what they were doing.”
“We’ve had some rotation of players with some coming back from surgeries in the off season, so to see our young and up and coming was extremely exciting.”
West Coast Fever will face the Magpies again tomorrow in the second of two matches open to select schools, with the event proudly supported by Chemist Warehouse.
